NOVEMBER TASTING: BURGUNDY COTE D'OR
Burgundy tasting includes "White & Red Burgundies"
FLIGHT I, White Burgundy
2003 Bouchard Père & Fils
Montagny “Premier Cru”
Tasting note: This too displays moderate oak that highlights the fresh, bright and airy orchard fruit aromas and sappy, satisfying if not particularly complex flavors and a finish that offers good verve and punch.
2000 A & F Boudin, Chablis
Chablis “l’Homme Mort”
Tasting note: As it usually is, this is finer and more elegant though it doesn’t have the same weight and power as the Fourchaume. In particular, the middle weight flavors are built on a base of almost pungent minerality though here the acidity does come across as mildly drying on the very persistent finish. Still, I quite like this as it’s an excellent effort in the context of the vintage. Burghound 89
2001 Francois Raveneau
Chablis “Montée de Tonnerre”
Tasting note: The purest of these first three ‘01s and though it is presently less aromatically expressive, it also possesses the best material. Ripe aromas of orchard fruits, especially apple and appealing spice undertones lead to rich, powerful, sappy flavors that have the best acidity and sense of minerality of any wine to this point plus an almost painfully intense finish. In a word, this is gorgeous. Burghound 90
FLIGHT II, Red Burgundy, Villages
1995 Domaine Leroy
Côte de Beaune Villages
Tasting note: Remarkably bright and sweet pinot fruit that is displaying clear secondary aromas along with notes of earth and spice that leads to supple yet nicely complex and concentrated flavors that culminate in fine length. This is really a very pretty wine that possesses an unusually round finish with none of the usual hints of backend astringency that plague so many Côte de Beaune ‘95s. In sum, this is lovely stuff that is drinking well now and should continue to do so for another 5 to 7 years though I wouldn’t push things beyond that unless you enjoy the complexity brought by tertiary flavors.
Burghound 88
2003 Domaine Anne-Françoise Gros
Hautes Côtes de Nuits
Tasting note: Pretty, elegant and quite pure red fruit with earthy, sweet and low acid flavors and a sappy, nicely concentrated and notably complex finish. This is supple, easy and forward but quite attractive all the same. Burghound 86
2005 Joseph Drouhin
Vosne-Romanée
Tasting note: As one would expect, there is a completely different aromatic profile and one that features gorgeously spicy and rather cool black and dark pinot fruit aromas where the spice continues onto the sweet, intense and mouth coating flavors built on a base of subtle minerality and a firmly structured, pure and harmonious finish that seems to go on and on. This is a classy effort that is understated and sweet and I quite like this as it’s at once striking yet reserved. Burghound 93
FLIGHT III, Red Burgundy, Premier Cru
2004 Domaine Bruno Clair
Vosne-Romanée “Les Champs Perdrix”
Tasting note: A completely different aromatic profile of dark berry and pretty violet notes all framed by enticing spice and tea nuances introduce fresh, round and notably sweet flavors that are beautifully precise and finely balanced, all wrapped in a dusty finish that curiously display a touch of rusticity. I say oddly because the nose and flavors are really quite elegant, even refined yet the finish doesn’t quite hold up. Still, this is a pretty wine that may surprise to the upside with time in bottle as the balance is impeccable.
1995 Domaine de L’Arlot
Nuits-Saint-George “Clos des Forets”
Tasting note: Remarkably elegant and pure pinot fruit notes introduce full, rich, intense, moderately structured flavors that offer good weight, balance and adequate length if not much complexity at this point. My rating my prove to be conservative is this can add more depth with additional bottle age. I would give this 5 more years of cellar time and drink over the next 5.
1993 Domaine Jean Grivot
Vosne-Romanée “Les Beaux Monts”
Tasting note: This isn’t as aggressively or firmly structured as the ‘93 Brulées, opening with a deep, rich, completely black fruit aromas followed by rich, round, nicely powerful and detailed flavors that offer good power if not much complexity at present. This is obviously extremely young and the absence of much complexity is of no great concern.
FLIGHT IV, Red Burgundy, Grand Cru
2001 Domain Bizot
Vosne-Romanée “Echezeaux” Burghound 93
Tasting note: Interestingly for such a ripe wine, this is rather reserved on the nose even with vigorous swirling, can only be coaxed to reveal glimpses of very ripe plum, mocha and spice notes leading to massively constituted flavors that explode in the mouth with breathtaking intensity. This is a bruiser of a wine that is every bit as robust and powerful as the Rugiens but with real style and grace despite all of the muscle. In short, wow! Burghound 93
1993 Domain Baron Percival
Vosne-Romanée “Corton” (Burghound 90)
Tasting note: Black fruits but there is also a lot of wood spice to go with the big, round, rich, very ripe flavors. As is often the case with young Corton, the flavors are a bit monolithic at this stage though there is plenty of extract to suggest there is fine potential here.
1993 Pierre Damoy
“Chambertin Clos de Beze” (Burghound 92)
Tasting note: Elegant, extremely pure and spicy with austere black fruit notes and understated, powerful, densely concentrated and superbly well focused flavors that deliver superb mid-palate punch and terrific finishing complexity. This has always been impressive, even since release and it continues to develop well. It can be approached now but it will certainly be better in 3 to 5 years.
