Opaque ruby. Powerful scents of red and dark berries, smoked meat, licorice and fresh violet. Weighty dark berry flavors coat the palate and become spicier on the back end. Impressively focused and pure, with strong palate impact but no excess weight. Finishes clean and long, with an echo of licorice.

Shows fascinating fruit that's dark, rich, vivid and concentrated, with wonderful layers of blueberry, blackberry and boysenberry that are sharply focused, smooth, harmonious and well-structured. The long finish keeps repeating the berry medley, joined by a touch of herbs and spice. Drink now through 2012. 200 cases made. –JL

Opaque violet. Brooding dark fruit aromas are complemented by suave oak spices, smoked meat and cured tobacco. Youthful blackberry and blueberry flavors display palate-staining concentration, and are nicely are firmed by solid tannins. Smoky minerality emerges on the long, sappy finish, which echoes with dark berry liqueur and cured meat. Serious syrah, in need of patience.

Inky purple. Intense, piercing raspberry, blackberry and floral aromas hark to the northern Rhone. Sweet red and dark berry preserve flavors are firmed by youthful tannins, picking up Asian spices and cracked pepper with air. Turns smokier on the finish, with the suave berry and spice qualities carrying through. Most Cote-Rotie producers would kill for the clarity and sweetness of fruit that this is showing today. (JR)

Glass-staining ruby. Sexy, intensely perfumed bouquet of blackberry, cassis, candied violet and Asian spices. Powerful but balanced, with sweet red and dark berry, cherry-cola and cracked pepper flavors. Gains depth and richness on the finish but maintains excellent clarity. Very sexy and already complex. La Bruma Vineyard Syrah

Inky purple. Vibrant floral notes complement red berry, candied plum and dark chocolate scents, with a hint of white pepper adding more lift. Impressively juicy in the mouth, with energetic raspberry and blackcurrant flavors complicated and deepened by a bitter chocolate tone. Plenty of power here; this would work well with grilled red meats.

Saturated ruby. Explosively aromatic, room-filling bouquet of blueberry, blackcurrant, licorice, smoked meat, baking spices and dried flowers. Lush and sweet, with expansive dark berry liqueur flavors and a gentle suggestion of tangy minerality lending energy and lift. Picks up an exotic cinnamon toast quality on the impressively long, juicy finish. This is really impressive.

Hommage a Max Syrah

$85.00 | Stephen Tanzer 92
Deep ruby. Spicy cherry and dark berry aromas are enlivened by zesty minerality and complicated by subtle smokiness. Inky bitter cherry on the palate, which shows a weighty, chewy texture and slow-building sweetness. Fresher and more red-fruity on the long, spicy finish. This was a selection of the best two barrels of Stolpman and the best two of Westerly, according to Davis, and is slated to be sold exclusively at charity auctions.
